durango mountain biking vacations
You know WTR is horses.  Now we are expanding form riding atop hooves to rubber tires and offering cycling.

As Durango prepares for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and we celebrate the last days of May (National Cycling Month), WTR is excited to announce our NEW 2011 MOUNTAIN BIKE PROGRAM!

Wilderness Trails is rolling out our 2011 Mountain Bike Program and You Are INVITED!

Our trail and road network on the ranch is being improved and redesigned, and we will offer both guided and non-guided mountain bike (MTB) riding on the ranch and the surrounding areas around the ranch.  Trails are being developed to appeal to timid beginners and die-hards alike, with a range from easy dirt road and single-track to world class cross country, DH and freeride.  For those wanting to gain confidence and seeking coaching, we are developing the WTR Dirt Park area at the ranch for general safety, skill building and learning MTB dirt jumping.

WTR has partnered with two long time area bicycle shops- Durango bicycle shop Pedal the Peaks and Purgatory-Hermosa Cliffs bicycle shop Cliffside Ski and Sport to bring our guests top branded bikes and a genuine Rocky Mountain cycling experience.

The WTR Mountain Bikes Program

WTR will offer at no additional charge to all lodging guests use of our 2011 GT and Norco Mountain Bikes, an adjustable- fitted MTB helmet, and a complimentary souvenir WTR water bottle.  Scheduled guided rides will be available as well as maps and advice on self- guided riding.  Guests who are looking to learn new skills are encouraged to schedule MTB coaching with one of our area experts.  A small bicycle repair shop and some cycling soft goods will be available at the ranch and Durango is home to our top level cycling shop partners if you are looking for something very specific.

The WTR ranch GT and Norco bikes are front suspension hardtail mountain bikes in a wide range of sizes to fit everyone.  For those wanting a full suspension, specialty or high end bike, but not wishing to travel with one, arrangements can be made to reserve a top of the line or pro model from several brands with our partners Pedal The Peaks or Cliffside Ski and Sport for an additional charge.

Pedaling Ahead

WTR looks forward to surprising guests with both scheduled and unscheduled celebrity cycling greats during the commountain biking durango coloradoing seasons (you never know what cycling up and comer or legend might be hanging out with the WTR crew!)  The WTR family is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices.  We believe bicycles fit this commitment and we encourage our employees to use bicycles in our work and in our play.  We are also committed to continuing to expand and refine our riding program, trails and special events and are thrilled to share it with you!

Until we meet- Happy Trails!

Stallion Dance by Claude Steelman

Stallion Dance by Steelman(1)

Claude Steelman, renowned nature photographer and artist went to "Disappointment Valley" last weekend and photographed some wild stallions fighting.  This is one of his favorite pictures.  As you can see, Claude is an incredibly talented photographer!

Claude has presented his work at the ranch during our Enrichment Series evenings, where we feature local artists and experts in fields like nature studies, geology and personal development.

The ranch has Claude Steelman photo books in our WTR Trading Post, including the heirloom quality coffee table book "Colorado Horses".

We are very fortunate to have Claude as a neighbor and enjoy sharing his expertise and photographic work.

Claude recently opened a Gallery on Durango's Main Street in the historic downtown district.  Tomorrow night, May 11 is the spring "Gallery Walk".  Please stop by to see his work in person and say hello to Claude!

WTR supports the work of Wild Mustangs and encourages others to support their efforts to better understand the American Mustang.
