Planning Your Stay at Wilderness Trails

Thank you for choosing to vacation at Wilderness Trails Ranch!  We can't wait to meet you, and share the incredible WTR experience.  We wish you safe travels.  Please let us know if we can assist you with any planning or reservations for lodging or activities in the Durango area.

Arrival & Departure Information

By Air

Our local airport is the Durango-La Plata Airport (DRO) which has direct flights from:

  • United and Frontier via Denver
  • US Airways via Phoenix
  • American Airlines via Dallas

Once you have booked your flights, please fill out the Reservation Information form so we may arrange your transfer to WTR.

Many guests enjoy seeing more of the surrounding area and choose to fly into Albuquerque, NM or Denver, CO, and rent a car. We are a 4 hour drive from Albuquerque, and a 7 hour drive from Denver. The countryside between either of these cities is packed with national parks, historic areas, and incredible sight-seeing.

By Car

Please check out our Location page (click here) for detailed driving directions.  PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW GPS DIRECTIONS OVER THE DAM!  Many GPS devices will mistakenly send you on a wild ride to the ranch - which is fine if you are looking for added adventure and have a high clearence vehicle :).  If not, please make sure you follow the directions on our Location page, which will recommend you drive ALL THE WAY AROUND THE LAKE.

Check-In

After 3:00 pm. Dinner is served at 6:30 P.M on Sundays and 6:00pm the other nights of the week, so please let us know if you expect to arrive late.  After your arrival at the ranch, you will be required (Colorado law) to sign an Assumption of Risk Release for the various activities in which you will be involved while at the ranch.

Check-out

Before 10 am. Of course you are welcome to do a Saturday morning ride, however we ask that you are out of your cabin by 10am.

What to Bring

We are updating our 2014 Guest Guide however here is an online copy from 2011-2012 -http://www.accessaltitude.com/wtr-guest-guide.pdf

It may take a couple minutes to download however it will give you an idea of what we offer once you get here so you may ask any questions ahead of time.

Temperatures range from 70-90 degrees during the daytime to 35-50 degrees at night. You will find that the days are warm and the evenings are pleasantly cool – so jeans, long-sleeves shirts, a warm jacket, western hat and boots are in order!  Layers are recommended.

Usually our guests find that one pair of jeans for riding and one pair of jeans for dinner is perfect for the week.  We have coin-op laundry facilities and sell detergent & dryer sheets in the Trading Post.  We also rent Chinks (or "short chaps"), which will extend the "life" of your riding jeans and protect from brush and rain on the trails.

For safety, children from age 6-17 are required to wear boots with a heel and a smooth sole when riding. All sizes of western boots are available to rent in the Trading Post so you do not have to buy boots before you come.  It is suggested all riders have heels or western boots for both safety and comfort.

Also, for safety, riders weighing 250 lbs or more will be limited to walk-only rides.

A swimsuit and shorts are needed for warmer afternoons, water skiing, swimming, the raft trip and relaxing in the spa. If you will be doing some hiking or running bring your shoes and hiking boots! We have some protective gear, including helmets for our mountain biking. If you are interested in getting ther most from our mountain biking, please feel free to bring your own helmet, cycling clothing and accesesories, as well as your cycling shoes and pedals if you have your own- these items can really improve your mountain biking experience during your stay at WTR.

We can get afternoon showers, so you may want to pack a raincoat or waterproof shell.  We provide slickers for riding. Cowgirls may want to bring along a skirt or dress for dance night!

Other items to bring:

  • Sunscreen

  • Flashlight

  • Camera

  • Fly-Fishing gear (if you have your own and are an avid angler)

  • Ball cap or sunhat

  • Sunglasses

Our Trading Post also carries a variety of sundries and toiletry items for your convenience.
